Sukhasana is a simple cross-legged seat. It is the most common seat for beginners in meditation and pranayama.

How to do Sukhasana

  1. Sit on the mat, or on a folded blanket, and cross the legs at the shins.
  2. Place each foot under the opposite knee.
  3. Rest the hands on the knees or in the lap.
  4. Lengthen the spine, relax the shoulders and close the eyes.
  5. Breathe slowly for as long as is comfortable.

Coming out of the pose

  1. Uncross the legs and stretch them out; next time cross them the other way.

  • Support the knees with blocks.
  • Sit with the back against a wall.
